First population estimates of two Critically Endangered frogs from an isolated forest plateau in Madagascar

In the largely deforested areas of Madagascar, small forest fragments remain as last refuges for amphibian diversity. Isolated populations of the Critically Endangered Anodonthyla vallani and Anilany helenae persist in the fragmented forest of Ambohitantely but little information is available to inform their management and any conservation interventions. We generated estimates of population size and occupancy for both species in the largest fragment of Ambohitantely Special Reserve using acoustic survey data collected from 84 sites along 12 transects in December 2018. We used a single-season occupancy model to estimate detection and occupancy and a Royal–Nichols model to estimate abundance and population size. Anilany helenae and A. vallani had high occupancy rates (80 and 93%, respectively) whereas their detection rates differed (34 and 55%, respectively). Abundance and occupancy were best explained by vegetation structure whereas detection was influenced by time of survey and rainfall. For our sampled sites the estimated population sizes of males were 855 for A. vallani, with an estimated density of 52 individuals/ha, and 388 for A. helenae, with an estimated population density of 23 individuals/ha. Given their relatively low densities, small population sizes and restricted ranges, any further habitat loss could have drastic consequences for these populations. Our results provide guidance for future species-focused studies, and can inform conservation management at the local scale. Our work will help to improve species monitoring in Madagascar and elsewhere, especially for range-restricted non-charismatic amphibians.
Formation of aligned core/sheath microfiber scaffolds with a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) sheath and a conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) core

Electrospun coaxial fibers are used to create core/sheath fiber structures to act as growth-promoting scaffolds for in vitro dorsal root ganglia (DRG) cell cultures. The core was a conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), and the sheath was poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which created coaxial fibers with a conductive core and an insulating sheath. SEM analysis confirmed the conductivity of the core and insulation of the sheath. Several coaxial spinneret designs were tested with the best results obtained by using various annular spinning needle combinations. Using a 22G/16G and 22G/17G combination, fibers with diameters of 6.1 ± 2.4 µm and 3.3 ± 0.9 µm were spun, respectively. The fibers showed a Young’s modulus and hardness of 0.16 ± 0.13 and 0.02 ± 0.01 GPa for the larger diameters, and 0.7 ± 0.4 and 0.03 ± 0.03 GPa for the smaller diameter fibers. In vitro test cultures showed the fibers successfully directed chick DRG axonal outgrowth with low biotoxicity.

Organic-inorganic hybrids have been prepared with tailorable and enhanced properties which are unachievable using polymers or ceramics alone. By combining the flexibility of polymers with the electronic and optical properties of ceramic materials, these hybrids offer great potential for many optical, electrical and mechanical applications. Silicone polymers because of their desirable surface properties, excellent physical properties, heat stability, and high resistance to chemical and UV attack, have been widely used. Hybrid siloxane-metal oxide gels have been prepared via sol-gel techniques, by using hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) crosslinked by metallic alkoxides, M(OR)n. In this technique, the use of organic solvents permits organic and inorganic components to be combined at a molecular level with the desired composition. By varying the type and percentage of metal alkoxides during synthesis, transparent and homogeneous organic-inorganic hybrid materials with unique properties were obtained. Also a secondary metal oxide species was introduced to synthesize binary metal oxide-PDMS hybrids. Systematic experiments were carried out to study the effect of the reaction conditions and metal alkoxides-PDMS ratios on the properties of the final hybrids. These hybrids were spin coating on silicon wafers or molded into bulk films to be tested. The composition and the properties of the transparent inorganic-organic hybrids were investigated and characterized by ellipsometer and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Experimental results showed that the refractive index of the hybrid materials exhibits a proportional relationship with the metal oxide content, the higher the metal oxide content the higher the refractive index. The refractive index was increased from 1.4 of PDMS to 1.7 of metal oxide-PDMS hybrid with highest prepared metal oxide loading. From the FTIR spectra, the structures of the hybrids for various metal oxide-PDMS compositions were examined.

Core-shell PLLA microparticles were successfully fabricated using a novel coaxial nozzle design. These particles were synthesized with different components in the core/shell layers representing three classes of systems of interest for drug delivery applications: PVA/PLLA, PLLA/PEG, and oleic acid/PLLA. The components were characterized for their physical properties and interfacial energies, and optimal conditions for the operation were determined. To facilitate the particle characterization, each phase was doped with a different fluorescent dye to aid in the confirmation of a core/shell structure via fluorescence microscopy.

PLLA microparticles were successfully fabricated via pulsed-DC electrospray. In this study, we investigated the effect of the pulsed voltage characteristics (e.g. pulse frequency, pulse amplitude and pulse width) on the particle’s size. We found that pulse frequency, pulse amplitude, pulse width, and the combinations of these factors had a statistically significant effect on the particle’s size. The process conditions to obtain smaller particles with uniform shape and size are a low pulse frequency, high pulse amplitude, and long pulse width (or a high duty cycle).

Introduction: There is limited data on medium to long-term outcome, and the morbidity and mortality associated with the implantation, of pulmonary arterial stents. Purpose: To assess changes in morbidity and mortality over the last two decades. Methods: Retrospective analysis of all patients stented between September, 1989 and July, 2001. Results: We implanted 664 Palmaz stents in 338 patients. The overall number included 229 patients who had undergone repair of tetralogy of Fallot, in whom 468 stents were implanted, 61 patients with congenital stenosis of the branches of the pulmonary trunk, in whom we placed 115 stents, 16 patients after an arterial switch operation who had 38 stents, and 32 patients after the Fontan operation who had 43 stents implanted. The mean age was 12.2 years, and the mean weight was 38 kg. The mean systolic pressure gradient decreased from 41 to 8.7 mmHg, the mean diameter of the stented vessel increased from 5.4 to 11.2 mm, and the ratio of right ventricular to femoral arterial pressure decreased from 0.66 to 0.45, each of these being significant at the level of p being less than 0.01. At a mean follow-up of 5.6 years, the mean gradient was 20 mmHg, the mean ratio of pressure between right ventricle and femoral artery was 0.5, and mean luminal diameter was 9.3 mm. Complications included migration of the stent in 8 patients, and pulmonary edema, hemoptysis and death in 5 patients each. There has been no mortality or morbidity since July of 1997. Technical changes include conservative serial dilations in congenital pulmonary arterial stenosis, avoidance of over-dilation, and simultaneous implantation of stents in the right and left pulmonary arteries in those with systemic pulmonary arterial pressure. Technological advances included shorter stents, improved balloon profiles, and central inflation of the stents. Conclusions: Modification of stenting practices, and increased experience of the operators over the last two decades, has virtually abolished any morbidity or mortality associated with the implantation of stents for congenital or postoperative pulmonary arterial stenoses.

The zeolite LTA (Linde type A) framework is composed of an equal amount of silica and alumina arranged in a three-dimension tetrahedral structure. This high alumina content zeolite possesses a strong negative surface charge in a basic solution due to the substitution of aluminum atoms into a SiO4 tetrahedral structure making it difficult to form a continuous layer in solution. Synthesis parameters such as synthesis duration, chemical composition, and synthesis temperature were varied. The crystallization kinetics was carried out using the particle size measurement, percent crystallinity from x-ray diffraction analysis, infrared absorption of tetrahedra using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the exponential growth model. The results showed that the zeolite A crystallization in a solution depends on the chemical kinetics of the zeolite formation, surface charge of the substrate, and the mass transfer in the solution.

Zeolite particles formed in the synthesis solution assume a negative charge due to electrical double layer effects. The membranes synthesized via electrophoretic deposition produce a thin continuous zeolite ZSM-5 layer on the porous alumina substrates. The thickness of membranes can be controlled by varying the precursor concentration, applied potential, and synthesis time. The permeation for a variety of gases through the membranes is examined. The diffusion properties are measured at near ambient temperature and pressure. Selectivity of n-butane over iso-butane is observed on every membrane. The diffusion coefficient of gases on ZSM-5 is also evaluated by gas adsorption on zeolite powders. The results of these studies show an ability to predict the effective diffusion coefficients. The estimation of molar fluxes across the membranes using the Maxwell-Stefan approach predicts a higher flux for thinner membranes. However, the calculations also show that even minor defects in the membrane have a great effect on the permeation rates.

Dynamic oscillatory experiments are used to monitor the gelation of the borosilicate systems prepared through the sol-gel process from metal alkoxides. The rheological experiments show that tan δ = G”/G’ is independent of frequency at the gel point in agreement with the results of others on organic gelling systems. The dynamic moduli at the gel point followed power-law behavior with respect to frequency. The power-law exponent is found to be ∼0.70. The apparent fractal dimension, dp, of the network cluster at the gel point is determined. The dF values for the samples ranged from 2.5 to 3.8 depending on the final structure of the evolved products at the gel point. The large values (dF > 3) exclude a simple geometric interpretation of the results. The effect of processing parameters, such as composition of reactants and temperature, on the resulting microstructures near the gel point is discussed.

Microwave processing was carried out on SiO2 -B2O3 solutions and gels prepared by sol-gel methods. Monolithic gels were prepared from alcoholic solutions of trimethylborate and tetraethylorthosilicate using a two-step hydrolysis process. A novel technique of Liquid State Processing (LSP) was employed for the first time, and it was found to be faster and more effective than the conventional processing techniques. The structural evolution of the dried products was followed using FTIR. The effect of processing was examined via surface area analysis (BET), electron microscopy, and FTIR. The microwave drying has been compared with conventional oven drying and vacuum drying techniques. Shorter processing times, improved microstructures, and unique properties have been obtained.

Titanium carbide may be readily produced in high purity via direct reaction between the solid phases of titanium and carbon in the process of combustion synthesis, also known as self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). The high temperatures generated by this exothermic reaction (<3000 °C) melt the titanium phase which subsequently flows to and reacts with the solid carbon. As a result, with lightly or uncompressed green bodies a product is obtained which retains most of the carbon precursor powder morphology down to the μm scale. The effect of three distinctly different carbon precursor powders on the final titanium carbide morphology has been examined. Subsequent effects of particle size and microstructure on the quality of the titanium carbide product are also noted.
